Responsible tourism in Harriniva

Harriniva Best In Wilderness responsible tourism background and facts.

Harriniva Hotels and Safaris operates in Muonio-Enontekiö area, in West Lapland, directly next to and partly also inside the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park that has according to WHO studies the cleanest air in the world.
'Muonio in Finland, a town above the Arctic circle, has the world's purest recorded urban air' -The Guardian

We are surrounded with clear blue lakes and rivers with endless fishing opportunities and drinking quality water. Lapland is called 'Europes last wilderness', there are approximately 1,8 persons /km2 and 2,5 reindeers /km2. Finnish Lapland is the world's largest organic wild food picking area, with a whopping 9 hectares of organic picking grounds. Here everyman's rights give the permission to pick the organic mushrooms and berries freely.

The Lappish Culture heritage is important for us, the Pietikäinen family that owns the company in 3 generations descends directly from the Sami indigenous people, from the family of Vasara. Sami are the only indigenous people in Europe.

OUR RESPONSIBILITY ACTION PLAN

1. PRESERVE THE WILDERNESS
2. SELL GLOBAL, ACT LOCAL
3. PROMOTE TRANITIONS AND WELFARE

1. PRESERVE THE WILDERNESS
We consider natural awarness as our obligation when operating in one of the few unspoilt areas of the world, close to great Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park and in the reindeer herding areas.

- Our three resorts Harriniva, Jeris and Torassieppi have been transfered into geothermal heating in 2015-16, which reduces the use of heating oil by 200 000 liters in a year.
- Arctic Sled-dog Centre waste is composted and we are partnering with Muonio municipality in a bioenergy project which studies the options od turning bio-waste into energy.
- Electric car loading points.
- We recycle and minimize waste in hotels and wilderness cabins.
- No paper or plastic exposable dishes used, on the safaris and outdoor dining we use washable cups and plates from Kupilka, which are 50% wood and 50% recycled plastic.
- Minimize towel changes.
- Non-leaded gasoline in snowmobiles, 95% of snowmobiles have been changed over to 4-stroke engine.
- Raise the environmental awarness for the guests.
- The programmes are operated with environmental consideration, for example operate safaris only on marked trails.

2. SELL GLOBAL, ACT LOCAL
Harriniva Hotels & Safaris is an internationally recognized operator, 95% of our guests come from outside Finland, in 2015 we had guests from 45 different countries. We are a recognisably large employee in the area and find it important to leave as much of the income to the area as possible.

- Co-operation with local partners, smaller entrepreneurs and national park.
- Promote locally and organically produced food (Torassieppi restaurant serves only local and organic food).
- Charity directed to support local youth and children.
- Demonstrations and government influence against large scale forest cuttings in Muonio.

3. PROMOTE TRADITIONS AND WELFARE
As a family company originating from Muonio area, our aim is to show our guests the real Lappish lifestyle. All services are kept close to the nature, respecting the Lappish traditions, Sami culture and animal welfare.

- Preserve the Lappish traditions in planning of programmes and services.
- Raise the environmental and cultural awarness for the guests, reindeer herding, Lappish and Sami culture heritage presented in the programmes in respectful way.
- Promote animal welfare in our husky and reindeer safaris and their living conditions. We are founding members in the Animal welfare in tourism services - project in co-operations with University of Lapland.
